Ahead of the statewide Karnataka bandh on September 29, a Bengaluru bandh has been called on Tuesday amid ongoing protests across the state against releasing Cauvery river water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

With two bandhs announced, there is confusion around whether services will be available and which shutdown is supported by whom.

What's open, what's closed for Bengaluru bandh: Here’s all you need to know:

Directions from city authorities: All prohibitory orders under section 144 will be in place across Bengaluru from midnight Monday to midnight Tuesday in the wake of bandh, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said. City officials have said that police have taken all adequate security measures to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. Around 100 platoons have been deployed across the city.

Metro: Metro services unlikely to be affected by the bandh call and should continue to function normally.

Schools, Colleges: A holiday was declared for all schools and colleges in the city on Tuesday by Bengaluru Urban district Deputy Commissioner Dayananda KA. Most private schools and colleges across Karnataka are shut on Tuesday.

Restaurants, hotels: The Hotel Owner’s Association decided to withdraw support for the Bengaluru bandh on Tuesday, citing confusion. It said all hotels and restaurants will be open.

Taxi services: The Ola-Uber Drivers’ Association has extended full support for the September 29 Karnataka bandh but said they won’t be supporting the Tuesday bandh. However, associations and unions operating autos and taxis have extended their complete support for today’s bandh call. KSRTC Staff and Workers’ Federation asked Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) staff not to bring out any buses from depots from dawn to dusk (6 am to 6 pm) on Tuesday.

Who has called the bandh?

The call for Tuesday’s Bengaluru shutdown was given by the ‘Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti’, an umbrella outfit of farmers’ associations and other organisations led by farmer leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar. It was followed by the announcement of the September 29 Karnataka bandh on Monday, under the banner ‘Kannada Okkuta’ led by Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj.

Who is supporting Tuesday’s Bengaluru bandh?

JD(S) is supporting Tuesday’s bandh, H D Kumaraswamy said.

BJP leader B S Yediyurappa also extended cooperation to the Bengaluru bandh.
