JK Dutt takes over as NSG chief

NEW DELHI: Central Bureau of Investigation Special Director Jyoti Krishan Dutt on Friday took charge as the director general of the National Security Guards which remained without a chief for quite sometime.
 
Dutt, a 1971 batch Indian Police Service Officer (West Bengal cadre), has served in various posts in the CBI and the Central Industrial Security Force. He was associated with the investigation of a number of sensitive cases, given to the CBI.
    
His name was cleared by the Appointments' Committee of Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on August 8.
 
A Post Graduate in History from Delhi University, he has been decorated with the Police Medal for Gallantry, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
 
The post of NSG chief had been lying vacant after Aashish Kumar Mitra was shifted as Special Secretary (Internal Security) last year and was being additionally looked after by him and later by GS Rajgopal.
 
Set up in 1984 as a Federal Contingency Deployment Force to tackle terrorism in the country, the primary tasks of the NSG were to engage and neutralise terrorist threats, undertake counter-hijack operations and rescue missions besides giving protection to designated high-risk persons.
