West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told the West Bengal Assembly on Friday that the state government has challenged the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which states that West Bengal topped the list of human trafficking cases in 2016.

"They have published it without consulting the state. In 2016, the number of recorded human trafficking cases in West Bengal are 948, whereas the NCRB has shown over 3,000 cases. The report is politically motivated. State director general of police Surajit Kar Purakayastha has written to Dr Ish Kumar, director of NCRB, demanding that a correction and a corrigendum in this regard be issued," Mamata said.

The NCRB report had said that of the total 8,132 cases of human trafficking in the country, around 44 per cent or 3,579 cases were from West Bengal.

She maintained that there had been an improvement in the law and order situation ever since the TMC had come to power, as there had been an increase in the number of police stations and recruitment in the police force.

During her speech, she also came down heavily on Opposition leaders. To the CPI(M) MLAs, she said, "I have noticed that they say all sorts of things in the House, but are not ready to hear my reply. They cannot face me."

Then calling the Congress MLAs 'chunoputi' (tiny fish) she said, "You people are 'chunoputi' leaders. Your leader at the Centre is dependent on TMC MPs for any movement at the Parliament. Sonia Gandhi called me up yesterday to congratulate me on the bypoll win. I also congratulated her on the winning of Rajasthan byelections."

In reply to that, state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury said, "We know we are 'chunoputi' and you are a big fish, but we can see that the development you are talking about is centred around you and members of your party."
