After Congress’ countrywide strike, the CPI(M) too has called for a strike on September 10 in West Bengal, against the policies of the Centre and rising fuel prices. CPI(M) state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said that their recent movement in Delhi against the 'anti-people policies' has been a huge success. “Keeping that in the background and protesting against fuel price hike and misrule of the BJP-led Central government, a 12-hour bandh has been called on September 10,” Mishra said. Asked if they were supporting the countrywide strike called by Congress, he said, “The Congress has called a bandh independently. We have announced it a little late but our decision of calling a strike was taken a lot earlier.” He also came down heavily upon the Center on issues like farmer suicide and the alleged corruption in the Rafale fighter jet deal and urged everyone to participate in the bandh. “While the Centre pays no heed to waiver of farmer loans, it gives a relief of Rs 4 lakh crore to corporate houses,” he said.

Interestingly, in a separate press conference, TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee said that while their party supported the cause and the issue, they did not support the bandh. “Prices of diesel and petrol are at an all-time high, value of rupee has touched rock bottom. This government is on its way to destroy the economy.

The BJP-led Central government is up to its eyes in corruption and had taken several anti-people policies. While we oppose the policies we are on principle, against calling a strike because it only leads to lost mandays and energy. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is trying to put Bengal back on tracks of development but calling bandh will only pose as an impediment in the process,” Chatterjee said.

He urged people to keep shops and establishments open and daily life to function as normal. “However, we will protest by organising a rally from Moulali area to Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata at 3 pm on September 10. All our members are requested to participate in that,” Chatterjee said.

Reacting to this, Mishra said that the bandh was called against the BJP government and to protest against the ill-governance of the Centre. “If Mamata really means what she says about the federal front and if her attacks are genuinely against the Centre, this is the time to prove it. If her party doesn’t support the bandh, her stand will be clear and people will give a fitting reply to that in the future,” Mishra said.

On September 6, Congress has called a Bharat Bandh from 9 am to 3 pm, protesting against the spiraling fuel price.
