Seelampur assembly constituency is one of the 70 seats in Delhi assembly and is part of North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency has a high population of the Muslim community and has been won by a Muslim candidate since 1993.

The constituency with about 1.55 lakh eligible voters has a predominantly Muslim population.

Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed, now a Congress leader, won the seat for five consecutive terms before he lost to Aam Aadmi Party's Mohammad Ishraque in 2015.

The AAP has, however, dropped Ishraque and has fielded MCD councillor Abdul Rehman against BJP's Kaushal Mishra and Congress' Mateen Ahmed.

The area was in news in December last year after reports of violence during a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

In 2015, AAP's Ishraque won by nearly 28,000 votes against its nearest rival Sanjay Jain of the BJP. Five-time MLA Mateen Ahmed was pushed to the third position.

In 2020 election, the BJP was hoping to consolidate non-Muslim votes. The BJP, however, failed to make any inroads and lost to the AAP.
