CHENNAI: Though the million fans of Rajnikanth waited long to celebrate his 56th birthday on Monday, there was no fanfare with the actor away from Chennai. He is in Hyderabad shooting for his film Sivaji, spending a quiet birthday, as the word goes, without even his family members.
Rajini has, for the last few years, chosen to spend his birthday away from Chennai and his Tamil fans. Probably knowing that this year too he might not be in Chennai, a surprise party was thrown in his honour a few days ago by director and former actor Bhagyaraj at the audio release of the film Paarijaatham.
Rajini’s daughter Aishwarya and her husband, upcoming star Dhanush were present at the party, besides actors Suriya, Jeyam Ravi, Prithviraj, actress Saranya and producer RB Choudhury.
G Ramkumar, managing partner of Sivaji productions, which produced Rajinikanth’s last ‘super-hit’ film Chandramukhi, recalls how they had celebrated the superstar’s birthday last year with him. “It’s a known fact that Rajini usually doesn’t spend his birthdays in Chennai. So we had a party a day before when Prabhu (actor-producer) and Jyotika (actress) were present.
Rajini cut a huge chocolate cake, which was distributed among the crew. The next day he went away to Bangalore,” says Ramkumar. The last time Rajinikanth celebrated his birthday was in 1998, the year that marked 25 years of his presence in the film industry. On that day, wife Latha launched the `Rajini 25’ exhibition. Ramkumar also recalls how, way back in 1991, when they were shooting another of Rajini’s well-known films Mannan, produced by Sivaji productions, they were together.
He says, “We were in Ooty, shooting. For lunch, we had organised for biriyani to be served to the 100-odd crew and had Rajini cut a cake. In the evening, we had a quiet dinner where we were joined by his wife Latha, who had flown down for the occasion”.
