Nicholas Pooran was the shining star in the IPL 2020 clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The West Indies left-hander blasted a fifty off just 17 balls and it was the fastest in IPL 2020. His exhibition of hitting was breathtaking and it was highlighted in one over bowled by Abdul Samad in which he blasted four sixes and 28 runs were scored. However, the knock by Nicholas Pooran went in vain as Kings XI Punjab lost by 69 runs to continue languishing at the bottom.

However, following the knock, Nicholas Pooran entered an elite club of players who have scored the fastest fifty in IPL history. Pooran’s knock put him level with Chris Gayle, Hardik Pandya, Adam Gilchrist, Ishan Kishan, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard and Chris Morris for scoring a fifty off just 17 balls.

The fastest fifty in the history of the IPL is by the current Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul who blasted a half century in just 14 balls during the 2018 IPL match against Delhi Capitals at Mohali. Before this knock, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Yusuf Pathan held the record for the fastest fifty in IPL history when he registered the milestone in 15 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2014 at the Eden Gardens. Sunil Narine had equaled Pathan’s feat in IPL 2017 when he scored a fifty off 15 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnswamy stadium. Suresh Raina scored a fifty off 16 balls for Chennai Super Kings during the second qualifier of IPL 2014 at the Wankhede stadium.

    Pooran in elite list

If one has to cut down the criteria to 17 balls, then Sunil Narine is the only batsman to feature in this list twice. In IPL 2018, Narine once again hurt Royal Challengers Bangalore with a 17-ball fifty that boosted Kolkata Knight Riders.

Remarkably, Chris Gayle’s 17-ball fifty came in the 2013 IPL encounter against Sahara Pune Warriors when he blasted a world record 175 off 66 balls, including the fastest hundred off 31 balls as well as the world record of 17 sixes. Adam Gilchrist eliminated Delhi Daredevils in the IPL 2009 semi-final with a 17-ball fifty for Deccan Chargers as they won their maiden title.

Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya hurt Kolkata Knight Riders in two consecutive editions. In 2018, Kishan smashed a 17-ball fifty while Pandya repeated the dose in IPL 2019. Chris Morris of South Africa hit eight sixes and four fours in his knock of 82 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley stadium but his fifty came off 17 balls
