Agnee-path to Bollywood

It seems that these days the rock band Agnee, comprised of two front men Mohan (lead vocals, percussion and guitar) and Koko (lead guitarist and backing vocalist), is spending more time in the studios making Bollywood music.

After giving music for the film Dil Dosti Etc in year 2007, they are composing music for the upcoming film Gulab Gang, which is about a gang of women from Uttar Pradesh. So is Bollywood music going to be the new avatar of Agnee?

“Yes, we are working a lot more with Bollywood than we used to in the past,” admits Mohan. “But it certainly doesn’t mean we will be losing our identity to do all sorts of music for Bollywood,” he says.

However, Mohan believes that making music for Bollywood can be tricky. “The pace of producing music in Bollywood is very fast. You may be required to produce everything between hip-hop to Indian classical. But our basic strength is our sound, which is a sort of folk music mixed with rock. We are sticking to that and not rushing into doing 10 films a year. We like to take our time to create music, that’s how the quality remains.

 Agnee hopes to continue with its stage shows for the audience despite the Bollywwod hang-over. “We love performing, and the day we stop that, we will cease to exist,” says Mohan. According to him, surviving alone on performances is difficult for the band. In those terms Bollywood is a good option to make profits.

“Whatever you do, it’s important not to lose your identity.

Youngsters who are looking at music as a career option must create their own sound first by which people can identify them and then proceed with projects like Bollywood. Otherwise it’s very easy to get lost in the jungle of haywire music,” concludes Mohan.
