Fashionistas can now make a bright fashion statement - by donning a LED-studded fabric that gets lit up by wearer's own movements.

Rehmi Post and colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed the Sp4rkl3 skirt, which contains simple circuitry within alternating layers of nylon and Teflon.

The materials generate static as they rub together while the circuitry acts like a variable capacitor, storing up the electrical charge generated, reports New Scientist.

When it builds up to a certain level the circuitry discharges, powering the LEDs.

Post says he and his colleagues' aims is to create clothing that can power a personal computing device simply by harnessing the energy in the wearer's movements.
