Compared to the records of the past 11 years of Ghatkopar-based Rajawadi hospital's blood bank, a fewer number of blood bags expired in 2016. As per the Right to Information (RTI) reply given by the hospital authority, only 78 blood bags i.e., 27.3 litres of blood expired last year.

The reply was received by RTI activist Chetan Kothari, who enquired after the blood collection and expiry records from the year 2006 to 2016. Within 11 years, 53,468 blood bags were collected by the hospital's blood bank, out of which 2,188 blood bags (765.8 litres) were wasted as they passed their expiry date.

After surveying the RTI reply from Rajawadi blood bank, the activist filed a complaint to the BMC Commissioner.

As per the RTI reply from the medical superintendent of the hospital, from 2006 to 2015, the number of blood bags which expired ranged from 141 to 514, but in 2016, only 78 blood bags expired.

In connection to the expired blood bags, Chetan Kothari, said, "The large unexpected number of donors, and the increase in camps in a single month are to be blamed for the wastage. There is usually a decline of blood donations during summers and Diwali vacation, so donation during those days should be encouraged."

The reply given by the medical superintended, stated, "In August 2015, there was an unexpected collection of 700 bags from a two-day camp. We tried to distribute blood to other banks, but they faced a similar scenario, due to which there was an increase in the number of expired blood bags and the total expired blood in the year 2015. Later, precaution measures were taken and the number reduced to 78."

Speaking on the wastage of blood in city-based government hospitals, Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM Hospital, said, "The term wastage of blood is used wrongly. Sometimes, the blood has HIV, Hepatitis which can't be given to patients and are required to be discarded."
