We started publishing on July 30, exactly four weeks ago. Already, I have been out of a job at least twice in that period. Or, so I have been told. Several of my colleagues — Ayaz, Venkat, Vinay, Jaggi, Smita, Neeta, many others — have been reportedly sacked or have left in a huff. That’s what Mumbai’s hyperactive media rumour mill gleefully churns out even as we cherish every moment we spend together.

“You still there?” we kid one another at work and play. Yes, we work together and, on those rare occasions when we can scrounge a little time, we chill together. Rarely in life does a bunch of like-minded media professionals have an opportunity to start something completely new. We intend to make the most of our chance, with your support.

We spend long days and short nights in order to chat with you bright and fresh every morning. We have to be informative and dependable, so that you will have us as a steady companion. And the more you like us, the harder we work to make you like us more.

In the history of newspaper publishing, rarely has a new daily been as warmly received by potential readers as DNA has. Granted, we titillated your curiosity with an innovative pre-launch campaign but the response to the paper has outscored our optimism. In four short weeks, we have hit a regular print run of 2.90 to 2.95 lakh copies daily. To our knowledge, not many papers in the world have notched up such figures so quickly.

To be sure, we can do better, in numbers and in quality. We will. With your support and feedback we’ll respond to your needs better. We probably don’t, indeed can’t, invariably meet all your expectations. We miss some and score some. But for each ball that whizzes past we play five with a straight bat. Our style is open, we let facts and numbers speak.

Meanwhile, whatever existential angst we have doesn’t emanate from standing in front of a mirror and asking, Kafkaesque, “Are we there?” We ask: “Are we there yet?” The answer is no, but, thanks to you, we are on one helluva thrilling journey.
