Many youngsters believe it makes them look cool, but low-waist jeans is being frowned upon by namazis. The site of the crack visible when a youngster bends to offer namaz, courtesy the low waist jeans, is being debated upon. The question was raised at the 19th Annual International Sunni Daavate Ijtema (SDI) on Saturday.

Ijtema is popular among Muslims as it gives them an opportunity to seek knowledge about the ‘right’ way of following Islam. A mufti — a scholar on Islam — is present to listen to the problems faced by Muslims due to lack of clarity in following Islam the right way.

While questions on hygiene and cleanliness during namaz and roza, life insurance, loans, interests, and Haj are usually more popular at such gatherings, the increasing influence of fashion and science has led to people asking newer questions. Should low waist jeans and tight jeans be worn by youngsters, particularly while offering namaz? Is applying hair gel, getting a body tattoo, ear and brow piercings, a ponytail and a sex change permitted in Islam? These are some of the questions asked nowadays.

“Tight clothes are permitted in Islam and are to be worn by women. Men should not wear jeans that slip. In fact, if one-fourth of a person’s backside can be seen, his namaz is not accepted,” explained mufti Nizamuddin from UP. About ponytails, tattoos, body piercing and hair gel, the mufti added, “Tying a ponytail is something women do, so men should refrain from it. Tattooing and piercing is considered haram. Something like hair gel can be used provided it does not harm a person. Mostly youngsters try and emulate an actor or actress, which is wrong. They should do it if they feel the need for it, and not as imitation.”

The mufti said that sex change was not allowed in Islam. “If someone’s features belie the person’s sex, they can be changed surgically to make the person a complete man or woman. Sex change is, however, not permitted in Islam,” he added.
