Citizens are shelling out 10% to 15% more money for water tankers this year. Owing to the water cuts, the rates of water tankers have gone up. People are compelled to pay more as the private water suppliers have also hiked the rates.

Water tankers are in demand. The water shortage that was felt more on the outskirts is now felt in the city areas as well. The water tanker rates vary from area to area. But overall there is a 10 to 15%  hike since February. Citizens fear the rates may go up by another 10% in the coming months.

Vimannagar faces acute water shortage throughout the year and the problem has aggravated since February.

Konark Campus in Vimannagar is spending Rs15 lakh per month on water tankers. Resident of the society, Sham Adhav said, “We used to pay about Rs250 per day about three to four years ago. This year we are paying more than Rs400 for every tanker. Last year the rate was Rs350 per tanker.”

The society requires about 30 tankers per day for 550 flats and 18 row houses.

Nyati Enclave housing society in Mohammadwadi, used to pay Rs1.25 lakh per month for tankers last year. The cost has now gone up to Rs1.5 lakh this month.

Resident of the society, VK Madhok told DNA, “We have been hiring water tankers since the last three years. About 25 to 30 tankers per day is our requirement, while the water that we get from PMC amounts to three tankers’ supply. So we are compelled to get water tankers.”

There are 300 flats in the society which now keeps Rs1.5 lakh aside only for water tankers each month.

“The cost has surely gone up. It used to be around Rs250 per tanker last year. Now it’s Rs325 per tanker. We get unpurified water. We have our own purification plant in the society. So that adds to our cost. We are paying industrial rate for the plant for no reason,” said Madhok.

DSK Garden Enclave on NIBM Road is shelling out Rs1,000 for one water tanker. “The supplier said the rate will go up by another Rs200 or so next month,” said Archie Menezes, resident of the society.
