Contaminated and impure water is not just reaching our houses; it’s also being consumed by the supplier ie the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Worms were recently found in the overhead water tank in one of the buildings at the BMC headquarters.

Officials of the accounts and audit department, who drink water from the tank, said it was the only source of water on the floor.

“We have repeatedly asked the maintenance department to check the water supply and install a water purifier, but they never paid heed to our complaints,” said Pratibha Patil, a civic employee.
Patil, who is also an office-bearer of the Municipal Karmachari Kamgaar Sena, a Shiv Sena supported union in the BMC, added, “The tank should be cleaned every month but it is not a practice here.”

A water department official said it was not known whether the problem was only on one specific floor or the entire building.
Shiv Sena corporator Shubhada Gudekar also raised the contaminated water issue in the general body meeting of the BMC on Tuesday.

Mayor Shradda Jadhav replied: “It’s a serious issue. The matter will be bought to the notice of the maintenance department and an inquiry will be started to check why the tanks were not cleaned.”
