In this season’s inaugural match of the Indian Premier League (IPL), defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Chasing a total of 169, KKR started off well.
Gambhir was looking in good touch and charged down the wicket to Vinay Kumar. The bat made a sweet contact with the ball but surprised everyone when it broke into two pieces. Later, Gambhir went on to make half-century and led his side to a comprehensive victory at Kolkata.
Before the reverse fixture where the Knights were up against MI, the KKR skipper broke yet another bat while practising in the nets. After the incident, the KKR players had a lot of fun during the session. Veer Pratap Singh asks Sheldon Jackson to give him the bat but the latter ignores. Veer Pratap pretends to be angry threatening to break the bat and does it with ease when Jackson hands it to him
From players to KKR team management, everyone pokes fun at the broken bat. Chinaman bowler Brad Hogg mocks Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCC) ‘No Knocking In This Area’ standee.
KKR were hoping that the broken bat was a good omen as when it happened for the first time in the tournament opener they won it. This time around, they almost sealed it off but KKR lost the nail-biter by five runs.
