In a move that many are likely to welcome, Uber has rolled out ‘Cash’ as a payment option. In addition to debit card, credit card and prepaid wallet, you can now settle your travel fare at the end of your trip using good old physical money.

The option is being rolled out progressively so if you don’t see it immediately in the app, expect it to appear in the short term.

In an official statement, Uber Mumbai GM Shailesh Sawlani said, “Mumbai we are thrilled to finally roll out cash as a payment option for you starting today. The last few weeks have been challenging for you due to other transportation options being severely disrupted. We want you to know that Uber has a simple  commitment and goal: to keep Mumbai moving, safely and reliably no matter what. We are excited to launch Cash in Mumbai, and give millions of commuters another reliable option to pay for their preferred way to ride.”

Note that it will not be possible to make part payments of a journey using cash in conjunction with other payment options, or vice versa. Also with this new payment option there is no compulsion to leave a tip; only the exact amount of the trip is expected. And there is no requirement of a minimum amount in the prepaid wallet in order to utilize the cash payment option.

As is wont for Uber to provide free rides to new users, they are offering a Rs 300 free ride promo as part this announcement.
