A police dash camera video captured the moment two planes came within 725f (221m) of each other above Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the event that happened on Monday, June 8.

In today's DNA, Anant Tyagi discusses the moment two planes from major commercial airlines appeared to nearly collide mid-air in Syracuse, New York.

According to reports, there may have been a traffic control error because the planes were only 725 feet apart at their closest point.

In midair, the aircraft may be seen in the video approaching the same destination from several angles. A few seconds later, one of the two planes moves to the left and the other to the right, giving the impression that they are colliding.

What Happened?

The recording from Air Traffic Control showed that the controller gave the go-ahead for American Eagle Flight 5511 to land, according to CBS News. The aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-700, was flown by PSA Airlines, an American Airlines regional affiliate. It was coming from the District of Columbia.

The controller subsequently gave Delta Connection 5421 the all-clear to take off from runway 28, which was the same runway that the American aircraft was supposed to use. Delta's regional affiliate Endeavour Air flew the CRJ-700 aircraft. The destination of the flight was New York City.

According to the CBS News story, preliminary data indicates that the planes were flying in "dangerously close proximity" rather than on a collision course.

There were two pilots and two flight attendants among the four crew members and 76 passengers on board the Delta Connection 5421.

Flight 5511 carried four crew members and 75 passengers, according to American Airlines.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.
