Former US President Donald Trump on Saturday survived an assassination attempt after a young shooter identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks fired multiple shots at him during a Republican Party campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The 20-year-old Crooks’s school friend Jameson Myers revealed that he was a poor marksman at school.

Speaking with ABC News, Myers shared that Crooks once sought to join the school's rifle team. However, after one preliminary training session, he was rejected and advised not to pursue further.

“He didn't just not make the team; he was asked not to come back because of how bad of a shot he was; it was considered dangerous,” Myers said.

Moreover, a member of the team anonymously told ABC News that there was a view that Crooks "wasn't really fit for the rifle team."

The school district clarified that they found no records of Crooks being a part of the rifle team. The school district said Crooks "never appeared on a roster", reported ABC news. However, Crooks was part of a local shooting club called Clairton Sportsmen's Club.

"He also shot terrible," the team member was quoted as saying by ABC News in a report.

The 20-year-old with an AR-style rifle fired from the rooftop of a building, about 140 metres from the stage rally where the Former US President was speaking. Crooks was later shot dead by Secret Service agents.
