The recent murder of two elderly women in Karvenagar locality of Pune and the gangrape of a woman in Beed district last week figured in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today with the entire opposition uniting to put the government on the mat on the failing law and order situation in the state.
       
The Lower House had to be adjourned twice-once for ten minutes and second time for 20 minutes as the opposition stuck to its demand that their adjournment notice seeking setting aside of the day's agenda and discussing the grave issue of insecurity among women after a spate of incidents of crime against them immediately.
       
Moving the adjournment notice, leader of opposition Eknath Khadse said anti-social elements who face externment orders have the blessings of politicians.
       
"The home department has no control over maintaining the law and order situation in the state," he alleged.
       
Crime against women has become the order of the day in the state, he said and demanded that the issue be debated.
       
Girish Bapat (BJP) said Pune was known as "pensioners paradise" and several elderly people shifted to the city for peace.
       
"But even they are wondering the futility of their decision to shift to the city which has now become a hotbed of crime," he said.
 
Subhas Desai (Shiv Sena) said in Pune five women have been raped recently out of which two have been killed. "How many more incidents is the government wanting to wait to wake up and take decisive action," he asked.
       
Sudhir Mungantiwar (BJP) said a debate on the issue is necessary to discuss the conviction rate of rape cases which is only 17%.
       
"We need to discuss if existing laws need to be tightened," he said.
       
Home minister RR Patil who was present in the House described the recent incidents as grave and said the government is willing to debate the issue as sought by the opposition.
