A rare surgery was recently performed at the civil hospital in the city to remove uterine fibroids weighing 6.2kg from the uterus of a 50-year-old woman. Parvati Dhakad from Madhya Pradesh had been admitted to the hospital over a month ago in the gynaecology department.

"She had been complaining of an abdominal lump for the last six to seven years and had been in menopause for the last one year. During her examination, we have found a hard mass corresponding to around 36-38 weeks of pregnancy," said MM Prabhakar, superintendent of the hospital.

He added: "During the vaginal examination, the utreus was found to be joined with the mass and further medical reports defined the mass at dimensions of 16x28x28mm. The eco texture also showed possibility of fundal fibroid."

The patient underwent ureteric stenting before the surgery and was operated upon on June 14, under spinal and epidural anaesthesia with a right paramedian vertical incision, by Dr Tushar Shah, associate professor, civil hospital.

"For the surgery, omentum was adherent to fundus of the uterus which was clamped, cut and ligated. And, 6.2kg fibroid was removed. For the next three days, antibiotics were given to her and stitches were removed 12 days after the operation," said Dr Shah.

According to the doctors, fibroids can cause no symptoms at all except for heavy menstrual flow and pain at times. As for causes, sometimes, irregularities in menstrual cycle and excessive bleeding can result in fibroids. Fibroids are not cancerous but they can cause symptoms very similar to a cancer called uterine sarcoma.

WHAT CAUSES IT
