Some actors prefer challenges of playing newer roles and things, preferring to not get bogged down by the same kind of roles. Others like consistency and openly give in to typecasting. One such actor played the same role in over 300 films, appearing in several hits, but never had a lead role.

The actor who played the same role in 300 films

Hamid Ali Murad was born in 1911 in Rampur. When he began his career in films in the 1940s, he came to be known as just Murad. In a film career that spanned from 1943-90, Murad worked in over 500 films, largely as a character artiste. But he was best known for playing legal officers, mainly a judge, a role he repeated in as many as 300 films. Also known for playing other authority figures like police commissioner or emperor, Murad appeared in many hits like Andaz, Aan, Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam, Yaadon Ki Baraat, Majboor, Kaalia, and Shahenshah.

However, Murad was always relegated to being a supporting actor in all the films he did, never doing a lead role. All his 500 credits are in minor roles or, at best, small but significant parts in bigger films (such as Mughal-e-Azam). His last role was in the 1990 release Pyar Ke Naam Qurban.

Murad’s unusual Bollywood career

Murad was born in Rampur when it was a part of British India and was ruled by the Nawab of Rampur. Murad participated in a procession against the nawab, due to which he and his family faced threats to his life. The family fled Rampur in under 24 hours and reached Mumbai, where he eventually met Mehboob Khan and narrated a script to him. While he wanted to be a writer, Mehboob urged him to be an actor. And thus, Murad became a film star. Murad’s son Raza Murad is himself a successful and popular actor, having worked in over a hundred films over the last 40 years. Murad passed away in 1997 at the age of 85.
