Music is the soul of a film. When we talk about Indian cinema, song and dance routine is an integral part and it's quite impossible to imagine an Indian film without any song in it. While Hollywood has a separate genre called musicals, all Indian films are essentially musicals. While some Bollywood films such as A Wednesday and Black have no songs (they do have background music), there is a film that holds the record for featuring most number of songs in it. Released in 1932, Indrasabha had a total of 71 songs.

The film was based on an Urdu play called Inder Sabha written by Agha Hasan Amanat and first staged in 1853. Indrasabha was directed by Jamahedji Jehangirji Madan and starred Nissar, Jehanara Kajjan, Abdul Rehman Kabuli, and Mukhtar Begum in the lead roles. The 71 songs were composed by the music director Nagardas Nayak. It is listed in Guinness Book of World Records in the category titled Most songs in a film musical. Its description reads, "Madan Theatres' Hindi film Indra Sabha (The Court of Lord Indra) (Ind 1932), the first Indian musical in verse form, had 71 songs performed during it's running time."

Imtiaz Ali-directed Rockstar, which had Ranbir Kapoor an Nargis Fakhri, featured 14 songs composed by AR Rahman. Rahman also composed 12 tracks for Subhash Ghai's Taal, which was headlined by Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna, and Anil Kapoor.
