Jayashree Sharma, 27, a Mumbai-based fashion designer, recently got married at a resort in Lonavala. All her relatives are scattered in different pockets of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. She knew inviting her relatives for the wedding was going to be an expensive affair.

Fortunately, one day Jayashree’s father met a wedding planner who suggested him to get his daughter married in a resort located on the outskirts of Mumbai, which would be comparatively cheaper than getting married in the metro. He booked the resort 5 months prior to the wedding, and saved around 20% on food and 60% on accommodation.

“Since 2007 the trend of holding marriages in resorts have picked up tremendously. But we saw a surge in it only this year. Earlier, we managed 10 marriages per year at our Lonavala resort, but this year we did close to 40 marriages and expect more as the wedding season nears,” says Jayesh Purohit, restaurant owner at Purohit Holiday Resorts.

Rajat Jain, executive director at Maharaja Group, a chain of Hotels and Resorts, says, “We used to conduct 80-100 marriages in a year at our resort in Ludhiana, and the number has now shot up to almost 150. Earlier, people had big families and lots of time to plan their weddings, but now with the nuclear families in vogue and less time in hand, they prefer marriages at resorts, where all their pre and post-marriage requirements are taken care of. It’s also 20% cheaper than getting married in a simple hall in metro.”
Resorts are mainly located in the outskirts of major metros.

Usually, big families which are scattered, but closely knitted, opt to conduct marriages in resorts so that the entire family can be together and spend quality time as they conduct lengthy ceremonies before the day of marriage.

“In addition, finding accommodation for so many guests in a metro may be a problem and expensive too,” says Surendra Gothwan, sales manager at the Kanchan Kesari Resort based in Jaipur.

For couples, who have limited number of guests for their wedding, it completely makes sense to hold the ceremony in a resort, so that along with the exotic experience of the place they can treat their guests with plush hospitality as well. One can book a resort, cottage, bungalow or even row houses for accommodating guests who have come to attend a marriage. It makes your guests feel special, and in that tenure they can also get an exotic experience living in that resort.

“Most of the youngsters today are independent and prefer to spend from their own pocket for their marriages. And, with the nuclear families coming in, they prefer inviting close relatives and friends rather than inviting a large group of guests which may end up increasing their marriage budget,” said a couple, who got married at a resort in Ahmedabad and requested for anonymity.

With inflation rising every year, people are finding it difficult to organise marriages on large scale. Many a times, the family ends up spending a fortune because of the traditional events that need to be held with respect to their culture. Some families also spend due to peer pressure.

“The basic reason why marriages on resorts have increased is because a lot of people can’t afford to hold marriages in metros due to the rising costs of food and accommodation,” added Purohit of Purohit Holidays.

When a marriage is held at a resort, automatically the number of people who would end up attending the marriage would come down as not everyone may find it convenient traveling all the way to the resort. “My family spent close to Rs15 lakh on my marriage three months back. But had I got married in a metro, we would have ended up spending nothing less than Rs18-19 lakh. We decided to get married in a resort only after having rationally calculated the savings,” says Rashmi Mehta, who recently got married at a resort in Lonavala.

In addition, the time wasted in commuting from one place to other in a metro can be completely avoided if all guests are made to stay under one roof at a resort where the marriage would be conducted. “It saves a lot of time, and the family members are free of pressure as we take care of all their requirements,” added Jain of Mahindra Group. He also added that, there is no feeling better than the feeling of being together for a special occasion, where every family member of yours is treated royally.
