The three-BJP led municipal corporations in the Capital are likely to see a complete change of leadership, as nominations for the mayors and other key posts will be announced on Wednesday.

All the three mayors, deputy mayors and three members of the standing committee will be replaced by new faces. Besides, in a major damage control measure, after the Supreme Court verdict on the SC/ST Act, the party may nominate one of the mayors from a reserved category. The decisions were taken at a closed door party meeting led by Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari on Tuesday, said sources.

The outgoing mayors have completed their one-year term in office on March 31.

While earlier the names of chairmen and leader of houses of the corporations were being floated for the new term, it was later decided that none of these will be repeated for another term.

It is likely, sources said, that the reserved category candidate will be nominated as mayor from East Corporation, since the area has a sizeable population from the SC/ST community.

According to the DMC Act, the mayor, deputy mayor and three members to the standing committee are elected every year in-house.

The BJP had registered a landslide victory in last year’s municipal polls bagging 181 of the 272 seats. The victory was huge given the fact that there was an anti-incumbency factor against its sitting councillors.

However, the party came up with a strategy to replace all candidates with new faces and ended up winning majority of seats.

“So far the decision to not repeat any of the present leaders is to give everyone a fair chance. Also, all new faces will ensure there is no resentment among members and less scope of corruption,” said a former councillor and party member, on the condition of anonymity.

Over the last two weeks, several meetings have been held by Tiwari with the councillors.

The outgoing mayors include Kamaljeet Sehrawat, who had won from a record margin, councillor from Dwarka (South), Geeta Colony councillor Neema Bhagat (East) and Preety Aggarwal (North) from Rohini ward.

Aggarwal was recently caught in several controversies, including allegations of “irregularities” in clearing projects.
