Even though the Delhi Development Authority (DDA)’s 2017 housing scheme failed to attract buyers, it is all set to come up with a housing scheme for 2018 this June offering around 20,000 flats. However, the urban body, unlike its previous schemes, has decided not to put on offer flats that have been surrendered in past schemes.

The new and bigger flats will come up in outer Delhi areas and Dwarka in south-west Delhi.

The DDA, in a recent meeting, decided to start the process of launching its new housing scheme within three months from now.

“We are about to complete construction of 20,980 flats. Of these, around 3622 will be Janta or EWS (economically weaker sections), 16,298 will be LIG (low-income group) flats, 579 will be MIG (middle-income group) and 488 HIG (high-income group) houses,” a senior officer said.  Besides, the housing department is preparing a layout for 13,000 more flats, he said.

These flats are located in Rohini, Narela and Dwarka, he added. The LIG flats will be bigger in size this time, as the old LIG flats were rejected for being too small. “This time the LIG flats will be in the range of 42 to 60 square meters, as against the 33 square meters in the 2014 scheme,” he said.

The authority had announced the draw of lots to its 2017 scheme offering 12,000 flats in December last year. Of these 6,500 LIG flats have already been surrendered. The DDA, government’s housing body, has now set up a committee of engineers and architects to tweak the design of the old 11,000 LIG houses in order to make them sellable.

The 20,000 flats in the new scheme are part of the government’s larger housing scheme to build 81,000 houses by 2021. The scheme was announced by former Union minister for urban development M Venkaiah Naidu on 30 June last year while launching the 2017 housing scheme. The flats were announced under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to offer affordable housing in the city.

“Of the total 81,000, we have already started work on 68,000 flats in different areas while most of these are spread across outer Delhi and southwest areas. These are houses which we had conceptualised earlier and had already earmarked land for. When the scheme was announced construction on these had already begun,” the officer said.
