Meet Rahila Mirza, Age 29, co-producer/media & image manager

Ocean spirit: Most star kids dream of making it big in Bollywood, for Rahila however the ocean had a more enticing appeal. So while many of her peers were being launched by big banners, Rahila took off to Wooster, Ohio for Oceanic studies. “I always wanted to do something grand!” she explains her peculiar calling. From there, it was straight to New York, where for eight and a half years she dabbled with marketing and PR.

Spin doctor: It started off as a favour to dad (filmmaker Aziz Mirza) and in very trying times, but with honed people skills and her New York work experience, Rahila managed to pull off the entire publicity of the Bollywood blockbuster Chalte Chalte. “Mom had just passed away and so dad was in a bad shape, Shah Rukh had a back injury, Juhi Chawla was pregnant (both actors produced this movie with Mirza under the banner of Dreamz Unlimited), so I was asked to handle the PR,” she recalls. The next logical step was ofcourse to set up Chimes, a PR firm that brought in a corporate structure to the brand building sector in Bollywood. Amol Palekar’s Paheli is the most recent film whose publicity she has handled.

Not in Daddy’s footsteps: “Just ‘coz dad’s a director doesn’t automatically mean I should be one,” she squeals, adding, “I don’t have the right mindset to give due respect to a subject right now.” Surprisingly, the acting bug hasn’t gotten to her either. “I’ll probably be taller than most actors!” she laughs. “Besides, there are a lot of people who like being behind the scenes and have yet managed to accomplish so much more,” she
reasons.

Hollywood vibes: A year and a half down the line and a Hollywood film (which she is co-producing with her dad) is already in the pipeline. “It’s a love story which will be in English. There’s just one Indian character in it. The rest are relatively big names from Hollywood,” is all she is willing to divulge.
