On June 19, 1977, Smita Sabharwal (previously known as Smitha Das) was born. Her hometown is Darjeeling, which is in West Bengal. Her father, Pranab Das, served in the military and retired to Hyderabad as a colonel. Anthropology and public administration were among her elective subjects for the civil services examination. Smita placed fourth in the 2000 UPSC exam and became one of the top IAS scorers. She had failed the preliminary exam on her first try, so this was her second attempt.

Smita has embellished her cap with multiple feathers. She was appointed to the Telangana Chief Minister's Office, making history as the first female IAS officer.
