The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Wednesday took over the investigation in the 2016 murder case of  BJP leader Yogesh Gowda in Karnataka's Dharwad.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) transferred the case to the CBI on September 6 after Gowda's family alleged that Vinay Kulkarni, then Minister and Karnataka Congress leader, of being implicit in the crime.

Gowda was murdered in the Saptapur area in Dharwad on June 2016 by unidentified men in a gym.

According to the PTI, the prime accused in the case Basavaraj Shivappa Muttagi, who was friends with Yogesh Gowda allegedly killed him over a land dispute.

It is alleged that Muttagi wanted to purchase a piece of land which was under Gowda's custody and the latter threatened to kill him if he continued with the process of buying the land. To take revenge, Muttagi allegedly planned to kill him.

Before the CBI takeover, the Karnataka Police has already filed a charge sheet against 6 people on September 9.
