Amid protests from Opposition parties, the Yogi Adityanath government finally renamed Mughalsarai Railway Station, Asia's largest yard, as Pt Deendayal Upadhyay Junction, a year after it passed a resolution in this regard in the Cabinet.

A notification to this effect was issued by the state Governor Ram Naik on late Monday night.

Though the Central government had approved the Yogi Cabinet decision, but the renaming move was shelved when the Samajwadi Party had created an uproar in the Parliament over changing the name of the Mughalsarai Railway Junction.

The RSS ideologue and co-founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh was found dead at the junction under mysterious circumstances in 1968. In a bid to revive his legacy and commemorate his death, the Yogi Cabinet had passed a decision to name the junction after Upadhyay's name.

Located on main Howrah-Delhi line in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh, just 20 kms away from Varanasi, the railway station is the largest 12.5-kms long yard in Asia and is the fourth-busiest railway station in the country. It is also the birthplace of former Prime Minister late Lal Bahadur Shashtri.
