Orissa-based artist Roul Hemanta, in his second solo exhibition in Mumbai, has a well-thought name for the canvas installations woven around the idea of discontinuous conversations. He aptly calls the series — Freeze.

The paintings have been made in three layers, explains Roul. “The first layer is the background, then I have added effects like shadows. And the third one is the blank frames, which I have represented in white. I have tried to give original effects,” he adds.

The picture as a whole is a representation of the cacophony of the modern world — depicted by the chaotic designs in the background — and how everyone is trying hard to find solace within it. The artist has deftly made use of soft colours in the background to bring out the pandemonium that prevails in the current scene.

“We prefer talking on the phone these days. At times you feel like you are there, in the scene but you are deafened by the chaos around and just want to observe the whole thing silently. The colour white, that I have used, is the epitome of peace which we all are trying to seek,” says the artist.

Roul completed his art studies from Orissa in the year 2001 and since then has been touring places and visiting art galleries to explore the works of other artists. However, it was in 2008, he says, that he had the resources to hold his first solo art exhibition in Mumbai.
