With the summer season at its peak, fashionistas are scurrying to flaunt outfits in fabrics that will make them look and feel at ease. Cottons and linens apart, most designers are increasingly swearing by the goodness of ecru.

For the uninitiated, ecru literally means raw and unbleached — so silks and linens in their most natural form are getting the thumbs up from designers.

Designers Wendell Rockricks, James Ferreira, Savio Jon, Asmita Marwah, Rahul Khanna and Rohit Gandhi, and Aneeth Arora have already included ecru in their latest lines.

And if you’ve imagined fabrics in their natural form to be boring, then these ace designers insist that it is anything but that!

Wendell, whose line was inspired by the Kunbi Tribe, says that he has “skillfully combined cotton and silk, woven and kitted textures to celebrate ecru.

My Kunbi Tribe collection is the fruit of many years of research and a catalyst to revive the art of Kunbi weaving in the state of Goa. I’m glad that it has resulted in a line which is authentic and contemporary.”
Fashionista and fashion store owner, Tina Tahiliani, says that ecru is looking up from the business aspect as well. “The ecru lines that we stock are made up of light cotton and muslin fabrics, perfect for keeping cool this summer,” says Tina, adding that design is the key to grabbing attention with such fabrics.

“Designers are now offering flowing and feminine silhouettes and I’m sure they’ll please everyone.”

Asmita Marwah says, “I’ve introduced a mystical muse, Maya, a free-spirited world traveller and a bohemian at heart, who dreams of a world without boundaries for my line.

” And for this, she chose natural dyes and fabrics like khadi, along with doris (threads) and an assortment of colours, prints and textures. So, whoever said going natural was boring, can rethink their stance with these designers taking the onus on themselves.
