Barely three months and eight days after his appointment, Milind Deora has resigned as the president of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC). Deora, who had lost second consecutive time to Shiv Sena nominee Arvind Sawant in south Mumbai constituency, had replaced Sanjay Nirupam in the run up to the Lok Sabha election. Deora, who had expressed his desire to quit on June 26, has stepped down to express solidarity and collective responsibility with the outgoing party chief Rahul Gandhi. Deora may move to Delhi for a national role in the Congress.

Deora's resignation comes at a time when the Congress party is looking for new leader to take over as the party chief following Gandhi's denial to continue on the post. Deora, who is quite close to Rahul Gandhi, has recommended a provisional set up of a collective leadership of three senior leaders to oversee the city unit until the upcoming Assembly polls.

However, few hours after Deora's resignation, Nirupam hit out at the latter while discarding the idea of three-member committee of senior leaders to run the Mumbai regional Congress Committee till the Assembly elections are over. In his tweet, Nirupam said the proposed arrangement of three member committee will harm the party further.

Nirupam, who was defeated by the Shiv Sena nominee Gajanan Kirtikar in north west Mumbai, told DNA,'' Political party is not a corporate house which can be run by the board of directors. You need a leader to lead the party from the front. Three member committee idea is completely rejected as it is illogical, inappropriate and impactrical. The Central party leadership should immediately appoint a new president as the time is too short for assembly election.

In another tweet, Nirupam said,'' Resignation or climbing up ladder? @sanjaynirupam warns Congress of 'hard-working' people like @milinddeora. '' He took strong objection to Deora's statement that he has stepped down to shift his base to Delhi for a national role in the Congress party.

When contacted, Deora said political realities have changed since 2019 results. ''We will all have to get ready for roles that these times demand. "I had accepted MRCC Presidentship in the interest of uniting the party. I felt I should also resign after meeting Rahul Gandhi. I suggested a panel and am being consulted by leaders to identity names. I look forward to playing a national role to help stabilise the party. Needless to say, I will continue to guide and unite Mumbai Congress" he said.

Under his leadership, the Congress party had also lost election in North and South Central Mumbai. Deora may move to Delhi for a national role in the Congress. There are in all 36 assembly seats in Mumbai in which BJP and Shiv Sena have got major lead in the recently held Lok Sabha election. Party insiders admit that it will be quite difficult to rejuvenate organisation in such a short time even after new president takes over or a three member committee starts its functioning.
