Two days after the Bombay High Court cleared the air over the issue of admissions in medical institutes and upheld the constitutional validity of the criteria by the state government upon medical aspirants, seeking admissions under the state quota, delay in declaring second merit list is has led to increase in anxiety among students and parents. The HC had also directed that the second merit list is declared soon claim parents body of medical aspirants.

On Thursday, the Bombay High Court gave a final order in the case by upholding the state's decision to make all three conditions mandatory for candidates seeking admissions under the 85 per cent state quota. As per the conditions, an aspiring candidate must possess a domicile of Maharashtra and have to complete 10th and 12th from Maharashtra state board.

While the final order of Bombay high court brought great relief to many medical aspiring students from state and their parents, it increased anxiety since the second merit list is yet to be out. According to the parents, if the release of second merit list is delayed further, it may give a chance to the students opposing the criteria to approach the Supreme Court to challenge the order which may delay admissions even further.

Sudha Shenoy, the mother of a medical aspirant, said, "Despite court's order in favour of the state government and the officials are taking its own sweet time to declare the second merit list for state quota. Are they waiting for students to go to the SC and delay the admission process?"

Echoing the sentiments of Shenoy, mother of another medical aspirant, Ruiee Kapoor, said, "The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) should declare the second merit list as soon as possible and also file a caveat with the Supreme Court (SC) immediately so that no order can be passed without hearing DMER's side in case the students opposing this criterion approach the SC. Parents body too is planning to file a caveat in the SC."

"It will be better if the second merit list of State government and private medical colleges are declared before the merit list of the deemed medical colleges is out. Once their merit list is out, the students will have no other option but to take admission there paying high fees that go up to 20 lakh. Fees of private and state government medical colleges are very less compare to deemed medical colleges," added Kapoor.

Despite repeated attempts of calls and messages, officials remained unavailable for comments.
