A day ago, the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) had issued a circular to its ticket checking staff giving them a target of 24 buses a day. However, the staff is unhappy with this decision and have approached the industrial court. The matter is under subjudice.
The TMT has been under scanner for its services and many efforts are being taken to revive it, but all in vain. The transport authority has received criticism from commuters. "This is not an additional work which has been given to ticket checkers. They have been asked to do their responsibility and no extra work has been assigned to them," said TMT manager Sudhir Raut.
He added, "The TMT is the only transport body which still has manual ticketing system in the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Hence, more vigilance is required while checking tickets. Our fine collection is low compared to Kalyan, which in comparison has a smaller body. So, we have only enforced that the staff should work and perform their duties. The collection by the ticket checkers is less than Rs690 a day, despite having a big network and so many buses."
While TMT staff said they are understaffed and the set target is big, they have approached the industrial court. Raut said, "My only mantra is to work and will not tolerate any kind of attitude from the staff when it comes to duties and responsibilities. If a work is assigned, one has to work as they are being paid for it. Even I am waiting for the decision of the industrial court, depending on which we will roll out the plan of action."
The ticket checkers are rarely seen on TMT buses. Manohar Rai, a regular commuter on the Mira Road route since two years, said he has never encountered a ticket checker till date.
