Pune girl goes on to live green dream

Twenty-two-year-old Tanvi Gadgil, a resident of Prabhat Road, will represent the country at the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Programme (BYEEP) 2011 in Germany. Tanvi, along with Mayur Rastogi from Delhi, has been selected as the young environmental envoy to attend the programme.

BYEEP is a global environment education programme for the youth organised by Bayer and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the aim of developing young environmental leaders and raising the level of awareness of the environment among the youth.

An alumna of city’s St Joseph’s High School, Tanvi will be a part of an all-expense paid study trip to Germany from October 16 to October 21.

The group will also have 48 representatives from 17 countries across the globe.

Tanvi was selected for BYEEP 2011 on the basis of her environment project that she undertook during her postgraduation at Loughborough University, UK.

“I submitted my project to BYEEP on the use of wheat straw as a low-cost non-food feed-stock for anaerobic digestion. The project explores the possibility how wheat straw can be used as a bio-fertiliser and fuel through anaerobic digestion,” she said.
Tanvi feels that nature has always been on the receiving end as people fail to understand its value.

“I want to sensitise the masses about environment conservation through my activities. BYEEP will provide me with the platform to propagate the idea,” she said.

“My parents have always been actively involved in environmental issues and took me along with them on their campaigns. They were my biggest inspiration in understanding the importance of environment conservation,” said an excited Tanvi.
