Akshata Murty, the wife of former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, had last year surpassed UK King King Charles in personal wealth. According to a Sunday Times Rich List, which ranks the 1,000 wealthiest individuals and families in the UK by net worth, the couple's fortune soared by over £120 million in the past year, climbing from £529 million in 2023 to £651 million (approximately Rs 6860 crore) in 2024. This impressive increase places them ahead of King Charles in terms of personal wealth.
Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, out-earned her husband significantly in the financial year 2022-23. While Rishi Sunak earned GBP 2.2 million (approximately Rs 20 crore), Akshata Murty's earnings were estimated at GBP 13 million (approximately Rs 130 crore) in dividends alone, creating a substantial difference of GBP 10.8 million (approximately Rs 110 crore) between their incomes.
They were recognised as the "wealthiest people to call 10 Downing Street home," with Akshata Murty's shareholding in Infosys being their most valued asset.
Akshata Murty was born in Hubballi, Karnataka, to Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murthy. She completed her schooling in Bengaluru, the headquarters of Infosys, and pursued dual majors in economics and French at Claremont McKenna College in California. Additionally, she earned a fashion designing degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. It was at Stanford, while studying business management, that she met Rishi Sunak. The couple married in 2009 and have two children Krishna and Anoushka.
Apart from their financial success, Akshata Murty and Rishi Sunak have made significant real estate investments. They own a house in Kensington valued at Rs 71 crore, along with a flat in the same area. They also possess a penthouse in California and a mansion in Yorkshire.
Akshata Murty's family background is equally illustrious. Her father, Narayana Murthy, is credited with putting India's software industry on the global map through Infosys. Her mother, Sudha Murthy, is a renowned novelist, engineer, feminist, and philanthropist. The Murthy family collectively owns a 3.6% stake in Infosys, with Akshata Murty holding 0.93%.
In addition to her financial and real estate ventures, Akshata Murty owns a fashion label, Akshata Designs, where she collaborates with artisans in remote villages to create fusion clothing.
