Author-philanthropist and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty recently opened up about how her daughter Akshata Murty played a significant role in making her understand the power of giving back. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Murty revealed a heart-touching account of how a conversation with her daughter inspired her to start her philanthropic journey.
She asserted that she was "sleeping" until her daughter "woke her up" and fuelled her commitment to giving back. She said that her philanthropic journey began when Ms Akshata approached her with a sponsorship request.
"My daughter Akshata's perspective made me realise the importance of sharing our blessings with others," Ms Murty wrote on X.
In the video, Ms Murty recalled, "She (Akshata Murty) came and told me one day that amma, I found out a very bright boy by the name of Anand Sharma, who is very good at studies but very poor. He may get admission to St. Stephen's College in Delhi. Who can sponsor him?"
requested Akshata Murty then asked her mother to sponsor Anand Sharma’s education. At the time, Sudha Murty was very busy with her professional commitments and she instead asked Akshata Murty to do the sponsoring. At this time, Sudha Murty revealed that she would not give money to her two kids but instead tried to fulfil their wishes based on a wishlist system.
The Padma Bhushan recipient then recalled her daughter saying, “Amma, you’re well travelled, well-read, fairly intelligent, and if you can’t do philanthropy, then you don’t have a right to say to anyone that they should do philanthropy.”
This led Murty to introspect and she decided to embark on full-time philanthropy. Talking about her change of mind, she said, “I was sleeping, I felt, my daughter woke me up.”
