A 'Japan Festival' showcasing several works depicting everyday life and customs of Japan is being held at AMA (JB Auditorium, Ahmedabad Management Association) on February 20 and 21.

The festival is being hosted by the Indo-Japan Friendship Association, Gujarat and Centre for Japanese Studies at AMA in cooperation with the Consulate General of Japan, Mumbai along with Hitachi Home and Life Solutions.

The festival will showcase four popular Japanese arts — Ikebana (flower arrangement), Sumi-e (brush painting), Origami (paper craft) and Karate (martial arts) through a series of demonstrations and workshops which will be free and open for all art lovers. Two popular animation films 'Doraemon' and 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' will be screened at the festival. Apart from them, other award-winning films like 'Take Me Out To Snow Land', 'I Are You, You Am Me', 'Miss Lonely', 'Twinkle', 'Free & Easy 3' and 'Free & Easy Special Version' would also be screened at the venue.

"The Japan Festival held in January 2009 in Ahmedabad coincided with 'Vibrant Gujarat Business Summit' held here. We had then held an exhibition of Japanese kites, tops, photo classics on 'fall' colours in Japan and had also screened six international award winning films," informed Shinichi Iida, consul of Japan at Mumbai.

The second Japan festival to begin today will unfold Japan in its vibrant colours and splendour, providing a meaningful and fascinating insight into Japanese art, culture, values and lifestyle. Among the various presentations, Iida explained the concept of 'hina-ningyo': “It is a one-day festival that is held on March 3 every year and known as 'girls' festival, dolls' festival or even as 'peach' festival."

While the films and workshops will be free for all, the visitors would be able to interact with Japanese families demonstrating origami, ikebana and martial arts. The Indo-Japan Friendship Association, Gujarat was founded in 1975 for promoting goodwill and friendship and creating better understanding and cooperation between Japan and India on academic, business and cultural fronts.
