Metro project will utilise only fraction of maidans

According to the data shared by the MMRC only 16 per cent of Azad Maidan will be used temporarily — that is during the construction period — and just 4 per cent of Oval Maidan will be utilised during the project implementation period of four years. This would ensure sporting activities will continue on the 80-90 per cent of the ground.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) on Monday said although the construction of underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro would be done on Azad and Oval maidans, only a fraction of the area would be used leaving the remaining portion open for sporting activities.

"Cricket pitches or matches at the Oval Maidan will not be disturbed during the construction of the Metro corridor. However, a few cricket pitches at Azad Maidan will be required to be relocated and the MMRC is working closely with the sports department to ensure that majority of the cricketing activity continues at Azad Maidan," said Ashwini Bhide, managing director MMRC.

Last month, former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar had made a remark about cricketing activities at Oval Maidan likely to get affected due to metro rail construction. His statement was not in favour of the metro rail as his cricketing academy may get affected during the construction. Additionally, there was fear among a few that entire Oval and Azad Maidans would be shut once the construction commences.

"The entire Oval Maidan is spread over 9 Hectares (90,000 sq m) of land and there is a requirement of just about 0.39 Hectares (3,900 square meters – 4 per cent of the entire Oval ground). Whereas Azad Maidan measures 20 Hectares (two lakh square meters) and the corridor requires, temporarily, a very small portion of 3.27 Hectares (32,687 square meters – 16 per cent of the entire Azad Maidan)," said Bhide.

Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ underground metro corridor will require only 39.09 hectare of land of which 27.29 hectare is required temporarily, while the remaining 11.80 hectares is meant for permanent use.
