On Monday, many news portals and trade pundits reported that the makers of Prasanth Neel’s Prabhas-starrer Salaar were looking for a release date in December. The film, which was earlier slated to be released in September, does not have an official release date so far. If it does release in the last week of December as reported, it will clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki and fans of the Rebel Star are not too thrilled about the prospect.

Salaar, an action entertainer, marks the first collaboration of Prabhas with KGF director Prasanth Neel. The heavily-anticipated film is a big-budget extravaganza and is expected to take a big opening given Neel’s credentials and Prabhas’ star power. On the other hand, Shah Rukh is having the best year of his stellar career with two 1000-crore hits under his belt already. Given Hirani’s prowess, Dunki is expected to be a hit too. The clash, if it does happen, will be one for the ages.

As the news spread online, many Telugu-speaking fans critcised the makers of Salaar for thinking of clashing with Dunki. On the Tollywood subreddit, one fan wrote, “SRK just scored back to back 1000cr+. This will be suicide. Dunki won't suffer much , it will be loss for salaar only ,as salaar makers expecting huge collection from north , I think salaar won't even get screeen in north. Please don't do it, it will runied the potential of Salaar.” Another added, “you can’t release Salaar next to an SRK film in SRK’s 2000+CR year. This is basically financial suicide.”

Some said that the move will affect both films adversely. “Worst decision. Both films will lose so much money,” wrote one fan. Another hoped that distributors will veto this plan. “No exhibitor in their right mind would let this happen. Why would anyone want two potential 1000cr grossers to eat into each other's collections,” read the comment.

Since he was capatulted to nationwide stardom with Baahubali, Prabhas hasn’t had the kind of success he would have hoped for. His three releases since then – Saaho, Radhe Shyam, and Adipurush – have all had big openings but then tanked, ending up as box office failures or at best (in Saaho’s case) above average grossers. Fans said that a fourth flop could end the actor’s career. “Right 4 back to back big budget flops would be career suicide.”

However, Salaar’s release date is not set in stone for now as there is no word on the December release from the makers. As per sources, the producers have only sought feedback from exhibitors and distributors on this and will take the final decision based on the response. Officially titled Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire, the film also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, and Jagapathi Babu.
