Shalini Pandey recently grabbed headlines with her performance in the Netflix series Maharaj. The actress has now opened up about the ‘charan seva’ scene with Jaideep Ahlawat and revealed how it impacted her.

In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Shalini Pandey opened up on the ‘charan seva’ or rape scene in Maharaj and said, “When I read it, of course, you think about it, feel about it. Also, I'm somebody who is very sensitive. That's why I stay away from certain things. I don't use Instagram. I wouldn't say I get easily hurt, but I am very sensitive to things happening around me. I even stopped reading newspapers because negativity can affect me.”

She added, “When I actually did that scene with the Maharaj, the charan seva scene… till the time I actually did it, I did not realise what impact it had on me because I did the scene and suddenly, I went out and I told my team I don’t want to be in a closed room, I need time, I need some fresh air, I am getting a little anxious and Jaideep Ahlawat understood it.”

Shalini also added that she initially thought Kishori was a ‘bewakoof’ (stupid) but through the process of filming realised, she has been made to think that way. She said, “Initially, when I read it, I was like bewakoof hai yeh toh (she is stupid), but then I realised she is not stupid; she just doesn’t know any better. She was conditioned so much that she believed everything she was doing. When you feel and do it and think about it, it shatters you. Then you realise she is not stupid. I hope she knew that this was happening to her.”

In the film, Jaideep Ahlawat plays a godman, who has created a myth around himself where young women are made to believe that they have to submit themselves to him in a ceremony called ‘charan seva’. He made the women believe that getting raped by him is holy and society also turned a blind eye to it.

Even before the release of the film, Maharaj faced controversy. The film’s release was delayed, however, upon release, it received immense love from the audience. The film delves into the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case and stars Sharvari Wagh, Junaid Khan, Shalini Pandey, and Jaideep Ahlawat in key roles. The film marks Aamir Khan’s son Junaid’s acting debut and his performance in the film also received positive reviews.
