As the air quality in the National Capital dropped to the poor category on Monday with PM2.5 and PM10 levels going up to 374 and 898 respectively, doctors suggest that one should go back to wearing masks and keep indoors as much as possible. The pollutants in the air can lead to serious implications and affect people suffering from respiratory disorders.

"The pollution in the air has both short-term and long-term effects. For short-term effect, one should wear masks when they go out or if can, try to avoid outdoors. With the spurt in the pollution level, there are increases cases of bronchitis, asthma, respiratory functions, and increased number in the Operation Theatre. The long-term effect is severe too as the particulate matter gets traveled to the brain through blood. It is suggested that with such high content of PM in the air, one should wear masks while going out, at least till the time it gets better," said Dr Vikas Maurya, Senior Consultant, Pulmonologist, Fortis Healthcare.

Delhi was listed among the most polluted cities in the world by a World Health Organization listing. In a study conducted by the IIT Mumbai, over 80,665 people above 30-year-old lost their lives in Delhi and Mumbai in 2015, this is twice the number as compared to 1995.

The report suggests that if not controlled, the pollution will affect 32,000 people every year in Delhi city alone.

An AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor, and 401-500 severe.

In an earlier report, DNA had reported that Indian doctors revealed that pollution from vehicular traffic, in particular, releases gases which directly affect the growth of sensitive organs of foetus like the brain and the heart and triggered the appearance of cancer-related genes in the brains.
