Headlined by Dulquer Salmaan, the Malayalam-language period action drama King of Kotha was released in the theatres on August 24 to mixed reviews from critics and audiences. The film bombed at the box office as it only managed to collect Rs 15.55 crore net in India and Rs 31.35 crore worldwide gross.

After more than a month since its release, the film will be making its streaming debut on Disney+ Hotstar on September 29. The OTT giant made the announcement on its social media handles on Monday, September 25, when it shared the film's trailer and wrote, "The King makes his screen comeback on 29 September. King of Kotha on #DisneyPlusHotstar!".

The Dulquer Salmaan-starrer was also dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada languages. Its OTT release announcement has been made by the official social media handle of Disney+ Hotstar Malayalam so it is yet not clear if the film will also be available in its four dubbed versions on the streaming platform.

King of Kotha has also been produced by Dulquer Salmaan under his banner Wayfarer Films. In an interview with PTI, the actor revealed why he decided to bankroll the film himself as he said, "In the current climate, people want theatrical experience. In Malayalam, we do so much of smaller, intimate realistic storytelling...I was like, 'You need to draw people to theatres. They should come and celebrate'. It should be visually spectacular and technically sound".

The period ganster drama was made within a budget of Rs 50-60 crore. Talking about the same, the Sita Ramam actor added, "The massive tentpole films that we all celebrate are not made easily. There's a lot of effort, time, and money that go into it. If we struggle with this film in this sort of budget, how the hell did they make Baahubali, or RRR? Like those are 500 days of shoot and have an incredible amount of extras. Me and my team love challenges (so we took this on)."
