Director Vetrimaran is elated after whooping win at the National Awards — what with taking home as many as six of them for his film Aadukalam.
Little did Tamil film director Vetrimaran realise that he will be striking gold by winning so many National Awards for his second movie Aadukalam. The announcement of the 58th National Award came in as a surprise as far as the Kollywood industry is concerned. The industry has bagged as many as 14 National Awards in all the top categories. And Aadukalam was a clear winner amongst all top films.
The movie, set against the backdrop of rural Tamil Nadu, is about two people competing against each other in a rooster fight (a common game that is played in the rural parts of the state). The film saw actor Dhanush playing the lead role, as one of the competitor.
Amidst tight schedules and several phone calls, Vetrimaran came across as being extremely calm and happy with the way the film has been received. “We did this movie keeping in mind the commercial aspect of cinema. Instead of receiving one more extra rupee, we have received a chocolate that will remain precious forever. I take the opportunity to thank each and every member who worked with us for the film. I just have no words to describe the way I feel now,” he says.
After giving a runaway hit like Polladhavan, that stared Dhanush and Ramya, the director seems to be comfortable working with Dhanush time and again. “A lot of questions have been asked about why I chose Dhanush again for my second film. We’d already made a promise that we will work together as a team again. The script of Aadukalam too, suited Dhanush. He’s definitely a great actor, and to receive an award at a young age is no joke. I am glad that he’s won the award for Best Actor for my film,” says Vetrimaran.
The director, who gives importance in making a film that is realistic, says that he’s working on his third film which will be made on the same lines. So will he cast Dhanush again? He says, “I don’t think so. Thankfully, our combination has worked well with the audience; I don’t want them to get tired of us. However, my fourth film will have him playing the lead role.”
