Mumbai man held for planning terrorist attack, received training in Pak camp

The Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad has arrested a 32-year-old Mumbai based man suspected of being a possible suicide attacker. The man allegedly receved training in a terrorist camp in Pakistan and had returned to Mumbai with a plan to carry out attacks in the country. He was arrested on May 11 from suburban Juhu in the city and has been sent to police custody till May 21. 

The man, whose identity is yet to be revealed is born and brought up in Mumbai and is close to Indian Mujahideen founder Amir Reza Khan. 

According to the police, the accused was in touch via social media with a Sharjah based terrorist who is believed to have been involved in several terror-related activities. He was called by his handler to Sharjah. The accused stayed in Sharjah for few days and was then sent to Karachi in Pakistan via Dubai. The police said in Karachi he was then sent to a terrorist camp where he received training of arms and ammunition like operating weaponry, bomb-making, suicide bombing and other terror-related activities. 

"He was trained for carrying out attacks in several places in India. However, the main target was to carry out an attack in Mumbai. Crowded places with the presence of foreigners, government establishments were on their hit list and after getting, trained to carry out attacks in Mumbai, he returned to the city with a plan," said a senior police officer.

"On his arrival, we had received specific inputs, following which with the help of Mumbai Police and Kolkata STF we nabbed him and placed him under arrest," said a police officer from Maharashtra ATS.
