NASA has issued an alert about a major celestial event occurring today. A massive asteroid, comparable in size to a massive skyscraper, is racing towards Earth at a massive speed. This event underlines the pressing need to monitor near-Earth objects that could pose major threats.

The asteroid, designated 2024 JJ25, was discovered on May 2, 2024, by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope located in Hawaii.

This asteroid measures around 370 feet in diameter, making it one of the larger near-Earth objects discovered by NASA. Its size and speed have sparked concerns, prompting NASA to closely monitor its trajectory. Racing at a whopping speed of 33,673 kilometers per hour, 2024 JJ25 is expected to make its closest approach to Earth today.

Another of these asteroids is a car-sized space rock, dubbed 2022 BY39, which is an

11-foot in size but racing towards our Earth to make a close approach at just 3.15

million miles. It is moving at a speed of 10,704 KM per hour.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has been tracking 2024 JJ25 after its discovery. While the asteroid is not expected to hit Earth, it will pass within a relatively close distance of 4 million kilometers, offering a unique chance for scientific observation and study.

Asteroids like 2024 JJ25 are remnants from the early solar system, offering priceless insights into its formation and evolution.

By researching about these objects, scientists can predict about the building blocks of planets and the processes that shaped our cosmic system. The close approach of 2024 JJ25 offers a rare opportunity to collect data on its composition, structure, and behaviour, shaping our knowledge of these old celestial bodies.
