The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken a very responsible step towards providing social help to citizens along with providing the basic amenities. The civic body has decided to start dedicated old-age homes and child care centres in each of its 24 administrative wards. The new Development Plan for the next 20 years will have reservation of plots for the purpose under special social amenities as a part of social responsibility towards urban poor and middle class citizens.

Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta had asked all the 24 assistant commissioners to identify and prepare a list of amenities required in their wards. Mehta had emphasised that the ward officers should treat these projects as 'administrative manifesto' and start working on the same soon. Old-age homes, one in every administrative ward and preferable locations, should be either near residential areas or next to hospitals or gardens. Old-age home plots will be at least 1,000 sqmtr.

Most thoughtful part of the project is apart from planned old-age homes, the centre will have facility of day care centres for the senior citizens. This will help them to come to the centre during the day and spend time with other citizens of their age group and find company, when there is no one at home to take care of them.

The old-age home, apart from day care centres for senior citizens, will also have possibilities of starting day care centres for children. This will help families to drop their senior family members along with their children at the centre, so that the children can stay with their grandparents and both are taken care of.

The location of the centres will be planned in such a way that they will be near to gardens and hospitals. The old-age home will also have dispensaries and other recreational facilities that senior citizens require.
