The civic administration has been planning to use small radio frequency identification (RFID) tag in garbage bins to track proper lifting of garbage from societies. It will be a pilot project in R (north, south and central) and T wards of the civic body.

The contract of garbage lifting in all three R wards (Kandivli, Borivli and Dahisar) will be over in August and BMC is working on a new model called all-inclusive contract wherein providing garbage bins, lifting, carrying and dumping will be carried out by a single party.

“This will make the contractor more responsible and we can track of garbage lifting by putting RFID tag in the bins,” said the official. The all-inclusive contract is likely to be given by September 2017. Later, this model will be followed in T ward. All vehicles that carry garbage will be equipped with GPS system to track that garbage is dumped at the right place. “We can track the vehicle as well as lifting of garbage by just a click of mouse,” said the official. At present, the whole process is carried out by multiple contractors and this lead to issues at various stages.

Analysis

The all-inclusive new model of garbage lifting is intended to make contractors more responsible. The civic body can also track garbage lifting and dumping through RFID. Residents can expect respite from piling garbage in days to come.
