Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday took bankers to task for failing the government in effective implementation of the farmers' loan waiver package.

At the state-level bankers' committee (SLBC) meeting, held at Sahyadri Guest House here, which passed the credit plan for the coming year, the CM said none of the banks took any effort to communicate to beneficiaries while disbursing the loan waiver amount.

The bankers, however, said there is no mechanism in place to inform the defaulter when such loan waiver amount is deposited in his or her account.

SLBC chairman Ravindra Marathe, chief secretary DK Jain and officials from various nationalised banks and government departments were present at the meeting.

Pointing out that some banks have charged interest on the loan even after the waiver was announced, Fadnavis said, "when this government announced the biggest ever loan waiver package for farmers in the state, we had instructed the banks against charging interest from then on. This needs to be corrected as the government has received complaints from some parts of the state with regard to a few banks."

The CM also expressed displeasure over gap between projection and actual crop loan disbursement. He said agriculture is the priority sector for his government and farmers should be given utmost importance when it comes to financing by banks. He directed the nationalised banks to bridge the gap between projected and actual crop loan disbursal amounts. He suggested banks to start initiatives like loan mela to reach out to needy farmers and to fulfill its projected crop loan projections.

Pointing it out that manufacturing sector is generally treated as valued customers by banks, Fadnavis said there is a need to entertain agri-processing units on the same lines. He said agri-businesses would generate employment and banks should finance such proposals which would prove to be worthy in long term for the banks and the state.
