Had the police believed Gul Mohammed, 34, who was convicted by the TADA court on Friday, when he spilled the beans about “Bambai ko udane ka plan hai” three days before blasts, things would have been very different.

Picked up on March 9, 1993, in connection with the January riots, Mohammed told the police that he was taken to Pakistan for weapons training and gave details of the blasts conspiracy. “But the police never believed me,” he told Judge PD Kode on Tuesday while pleading leniency. He said his house in Behrampada, Bandra (east), was burnt during the 1992-93 riots.

After his arrest, his father’s marble shop was sold off. He told Judge Kode: “I have six children and a handicapped brother to take care of. Please show mercy.”

The four others convicted with him for receiving weapons training in Pakistan also pleaded for mercy, relating similar stories of dependent relatives and deprivation.
